Center Learning Technologies Project supported a project, between
1993 - 1996, in which high school students built a small sub-sonic
wind tunnel to use in the classroom to demonstrate aeronautical principals.
The goal of this project was to advance the students' level of understanding
in the areas of math and science. |

The Team Prada victory was the culmination of
three years hard work by a vast number of people. Today, just
like in F1 racing, Americas Cup competition is driven by cutting
edge design and development tools. The use of hi-end 3D CAD design
and modeling tools, particularly when it comes to designing the hull,
keel and bulb of a boat, is commonplace. |

1. "The Design Spiral for Computer-Aided Boat Design" (72
pages). This is a good overview of the boat design process and how
it is applied to the computer.
2. "Automatic Hull Variation and Optimization" ( 10 pages).
This is a technical (SNAME) paper that discusses some of the new methods
we're working on.
3. "Hull Design: From the Drawing Board to the Computer"
(13 pages).
4. "The Dirty Little Secrets of Hull Design by Computer".
Published in Designer's Quarterly, this article discusses many of
the difficulties of describing complex hull shapes using NURB surfaces.
5. "5-Axis Milling for Plugs, Molds, and Tooling" - This
article discusses the process of CNC milling directly from the computer
hull model. |

| Finite Element Analysis, Structural design,
Yacht Design, Composites |
|
Team New Zealand's Black Magic, the yacht that
recently won the coveted America's Cup in the seas off San Diego,
had an important element in its pedigree: analysis with MSC.NASTRAN.
The initial geometry was read from Maxsurf into EDS/Unigraphics using
an IGES file. The first mesh was developed using Unigraphics/GFEM.
Because the yacht is a floating structure, a great deal of effort
was spent by Team New Zealand in arriving at loads and boundary conditions
that would correctly model both hydrostatic pressure loads and loads
from the masts and stays... |

Shipbuilding companies in the Far East, especially
in Japan, are pioneers in the use of finite element analysis. Since
the mid-1960s, Japanese shipbuilders have been in a lead position
in the technical evolution of finite element modeling (FEM), which
has helped them maintain their business prosperity. It was in the
early 60s that FEA technology was first introduced to Japanese shipbuilding
companies.... |

Laws of Aerodynamics and Lift. In academia, wings
are analyzed by considering the physics of the fluid. There are three
known laws that come into play for the standard flight conditions.
These are: 1. Conservation of Mass 2. Conservation of Momentum 3.
Conservation of Energy These laws can tell you what causes lift for
your particular airfoil... |

A Tale of Two Airfoils. Why is there a difference
in the profile drag coefficient between two symmetrical airfoils of
the same maximum thickness and at the same Reynolds number? The drag
coefficients (as computed by VisualFoil) are 0.005927 and 0.004181
for the NACA 0012 and NACA 66-012 respectively. The Reynolds number
is chosen to be 3 million so comparisons can be made with experimental
data. The following article provides a brief explanation... |

Keel Parameters and Performance By David Vacanti.
Reprint From Sail Magazine August 1985. In the design of a sailboat
keel, it is not possible simply to write down all the optimum proportions
and draw the keel accordingly. A designer must cope with several limitations,
and he or she is not always free to use those optimum values. |

| Graphic File Formats |
|
Neutral file formats, information about IGES,
DXF, and STEP. Neutral files and neutral file interfaces are needed
in order to exchange product data between CAD systems. Also direct
translators exist but the the number of needed translators is becoming
large if there are many CAD systems involved in the data transfer.
For each pair of CAD systems to be communicated two translators are
required, one for each direction. |

Fitting Smooth Surfaces to Dense Polygon Meshes
by Venkat Krishnamurthy and Marc Levoy. Recent progress in acquiring
shape from range data permits the acquisition of seamless million-polygon
meshes from physical models. In this paper, we present an algorithm

topology into tensor product B-spline surface patches with accompanying
displacement maps. This choice of representation yields acoarse but
efficient model suitable for animation and a fine but more expensive
model suitable for rendering... |

Unusual skin that allows deep-ocean sharks to
cut through water as if it were air may someday help engineers reduce
air drag on airplanes. Hammerheads and some other kinds of sharks

scalelike projections on shark skin whose microstructures help to
reduce fluid drag. The denticles are attached to tiny-subskin muscles... |

and the power of the flukes, allow the dolphin to swim at high speeds... |

Volume gridding for CFD starts from a geometric

We describe four Relational Geometry (RG) based
implementations: two commercial surface modelers and two solid modeler
prototypes which implement RG on top of commercially available solid

especially suited to conceptual design and to creation of parametric
series of models as part of a design optimization process... |
